BRobinson pledges to continue rights dialogue with China

GENEVA, Jan 21 (AFP) - UN Human Rights High Commissioner Mary Robinson said Thursday she would continue a policy of dialogue with China while criticising Beijing's recent jailing of dissidents and repression in Tibet.

A team of experts from the commission will visit China late February and early March to discuss the application of two international conventions on human rights which China has signed, Robinson told a press conference.

The mission is the planned follow-up to the visit the former Irish president made to China last September, the first there by a human rights high commissioner.

Robinson said that pursuing dialogue to improve the human rights situation in China did not mean there would not be criticism of Beijing.

"There are very serious concerns...also in relation to incidents in Tibet. These serious concerns make it more important in my assessment that we proceed as we are doing."

Robinson said there were two parallel approaches. "The fact that we are proceeding with the follow-up mission in no way excludes being prepared both diplomatically and in any other way to address issues of violations."
